GEM solar panels maximize drive time between charges by harnessing renewable energy

Custom roof panels maximize off-grid charging efficiency and sustainability.

Anaheim, Calif., April 26, 2023 – Harness the power of the sun to charge your GEM electric vehicle with new, high-efficiency and fully integrated solar panels. The thoughtfully designed, custom-fit panels are available as a factory option on GEM e4, e6 and eL XD vehicles, model year 2023 or newer.

“This Earth Month, we’re introducing a new solar panel option to power GEM electric vehicles with renewable energy,” said Joe Kenney, engineering director, Waev. “Sustainability has been at the core of GEM for more than 20 years and we’re dedicated to providing our customers – both individuals and businesses – with more sustainable ways to move.”

When the new GEM solar panels can absorb sunlight – direct or indirect – Photovoltaic (PV) cells absorb the sun’s energy to create an electrical current that is automatically converted to electricity. The electricity then goes to the charge controller and stores the energy in the vehicle’s batteries – providing peace of mind that GEM vehicles are gaining charge, with or without a charger.

Recharge with Renewable Solar Energy

  • Sustainability – reduce grid-tied energy consumption by harnessing renewable solar energy. Coupled with the all-electric GEM, the configuration provides zero emission transportation to help businesses and individuals meet their sustainability goals.
  • Convenience and Independence – take back some freedom on where you drive your GEM knowing you can recharge wherever there is sun, without needing to plug in.
  • Extended Range – give your drive time a boost by extending your battery range up to 40%*

The all-new GEM solar panels use monocrystalline cells that produce more kWh of electricity than other solar panels currently on the market – maximizing efficiency with less panels required. Designed to withstand adverse weather conditions, the high-quality solar panels are manufactured in the U.S. and feature ETFE encapsulation resulting in little required maintenance and resilience to the elements such as rain, hail and sun. SunPower solar panels are UV stable, optically clear and will not yellow or crack after long-term exposure.

*GEM model, battery type, sunlight exposure, payload and terrain will impact range.
